Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French maltase.
Etymology: < French maltase (H. P. Wysman 1890, in Recueil des travaux chimiques des Pays-Bays 9 1) < malt malt n.1 + -ase -ase suffix.
Biochemistry.
Any of a group of enzymes that hydrolyse maltose to glucose (or, more generally, hydrolyse terminal α-glucosidic bonds of oligosaccharides to yield glucose); α-glucosidase.
