Origin: A borrowing from Sanskrit. Etymon: Sanskrit Manu.
Etymology: < Sanskrit Manu progenitor of humankind (also used with metaphorical implication ‘humankind’; derivatives meaning ‘offspring of Manu’ are used for ‘man, human being’), cognate with man n.1 Compare manvantara n.
Hindu Mythology.
The archetypal first man, father of the human race and legendary author of the Laws of Manu (Manu-smṛti), an important Sanskrit legal code. Also: any of a series of fourteen cosmic deities, each of which is believed to preside over one of the manvantaras.
