Origin: A variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: manteau n.
Etymology: < manteau n., probably with the ending assimilated to the diminutive suffix -y suffix6; compare mantua n.2It is unclear whether the following represents an earlier example of this word or an unusual variant of manteau n.:1672 Berwickshire Old Doc. in Dict. Older Sc. Tongue (1973) IV. 80/1 For ane mantea to Isbell,..for ane stripe gowne to Isbell.
Now chiefly Scottish and English regional (northern). (archaic and rare).
A kind of loose gown or mantle; spec. = mantua n.2 Also more fully manty coat.In quot. 1796 used of clothes collectively.
