Etymology: < mantel n. + piece n.The form le mantelpece occurs in a Latin context in a document of 1400 (recorded in L. F. Salzman Building in Eng. (1967) 102), where it is uncertain whether an English or an otherwise unattested Anglo-Norman form is shown.
