Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French malonique.
Etymology: < French malonique (V. Dessaignes 1858, in Compt. rend. hebd. de l'Acad. des Sci. 47 76) < mal- (in malique malic adj.) + -onique , probably an arbitrary suffix (compare -onic suffix).
Chemistry.
1. malonic acid n. a crystalline acid, CH2(COOH)2, obtainable by oxidation of malic acid; propanedioic acid.
