Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Dutch. Or (ii) a borrowing from Middle Low German. Etymons: Dutch malemeseye, malveseye; Middle Low German malmesīe, malvesīe.
Etymology: Either < Middle Dutch malemeseye or < Middle Low German malmesīe, malmasīe, variants respectively of Middle Dutch malveseye and Middle Low German malvesīe (compare Middle High German malmasier , post-classical Latin malmasia (in a 15th-cent. German glossary), malmasetum , early modern Danish malmesye , Occitan (Bearnese) marmusìe ), ultimately < Greek Μονεμβασία (see malvasia n.). It is uncertain whether the forms in -m- arise from independent forms of the place name or from assimilation in forms in -v- ; similarly the precise mode of transmission of the name of a product originally imported from the Mediterranean is unclear: compare French and Italian forms cited s.vv. malvoisie n. and malvasia n.With the forms in -n compare etymological note s.v. malvoisie n.
1. A strong sweet wine, originally the product of the district of Monemvasia (Napoli di Malvasia) in the Peloponnese, Greece, later also from other parts of the Mediterranean, the Azores, the Canaries, Madeira, and elsewhere. Now esp.: a similar fortified wine from these places (esp. Madeira).
