单词 | malmquist |
释义 | Malmquistn. Astronomy. attributive and in the genitive. Designating concepts (developed by Malmquist or arising out of his work) which relate to the measurement of the distance, size, and brightness of stars and galaxies. Malmquist bias n. a statistical effect occurring in the measurement of brightness and making distant objects appear closer than they are; (also) an instance of this. ΚΠ 1965 V. M. Blanco in A. Blaauw & M. Schmidt Galactic Struct. xii. 249 The effect on the absolute magnitude..of the selection of stars according to apparent magnitude may be computed with Malmquist's formula. 1974 G. A. Tammann in M. S. Longair Internat. Astron. Union Symposium 63 50 If one works at the telescope limit, the discrimination against intrinsically fainter objects can become very severe. Accordingly the Malmquist correction (Eddington, 1914; Malmquist, 1921) has to be considered. 1978 Astron. Jrnl. 83 1026 The use of line widths as distance indicators is subject to uncertainties due to type dependence, Malmquist bias, and the intrinsic scatter inherent in the relation between line width and absolute magnitude. 1981 D. Mihalas & J. Binney Galactic Astron. (ed. 2) iv. 242 This effect, called the Malmquist bias, arises because, when one selects stars of fixed apparent magnitude, the volume element containing the more distant, intrinsically luminous stars is larger than that occupied by nearer, fainter objects. 1995 Astron. Soc. Pacific Conf. Ser. 84 271 The space density distributions of these stars were obtained by employing the Matrix and Malmquist methods. This is a new entry (OED Third Edition, June 2000; most recently modified version published online March 2022). < n.1965 |
