Origin: Probably a borrowing from French. Etymon: French malmignatte.

Etymology: Probably < French malmignatte (1860 in the passage translated in quot. 1861) < Corsican malmignatta or Italian malmignatta (earliest attested in the 19th cent.) < malo bad ( < classical Latin malus : see mal- prefix) + mignatta leech (perhaps ultimately cognate with French magnan silkworm: see magnanerie n.).

A venomous spider of Mediterranean countries which belongs to a race of Latrodectus mactans, closely related to the American black widow.
