Origin: Probably from a proper name. Etymon: proper name Malmaison.
Etymology: Probably < the name of Malmaison, a château near Paris, formerly residence of the empress Joséphine Bonaparte, during whose time the garden was famous for the wide variety of roses and other flowers cultivated there.Compare Souvenir de la Malmaison, the name of a rose, which first appears in an English context in S. Reynolds Hole Book about Roses (1869) 202. The carnation may have taken its name from the rose rather than directly from the garden.
