Etymology: < scientific Latin Mallophaga (C. L. Nitzsch 1818, in Mag. der Entomol. 3; < ancient Greek μαλλός wool (further etymology unknown) + scientific Latin -phaga , neuter plural of -phagus : see -phagous comb. form) + -an suffix.

A member of the group Mallophaga of lice with chewing mouthparts that feed on feathers, hair, scales of skin, etc., and are ectoparasites mainly of birds. Also called bird-louse, biting louse.The group Mallophaga is now usually treated as an order, but its members are sometimes included with the sucking lice ( Anoplura) in a single order, Phthiraptera, in which case the taxon Mallophaga is either treated as a suborder or abandoned.
