Etymology: < Portuguese mangelin, mangelim (mid 16th cent.) < Tamil mañcāḷi, Telugu manjāḷi the seed of the red sandalwood used as jeweller's weight. With variants mangiar, mangere, compare also Malayalam mañcāṭi, Tamil mañcāṭi, Telugu manjāḍi; the -r- may represent the retroflex ṭ or ḍ. Compare Dutch Mangelijn (late 16th cent.), French mangellin (early 17th cent.).The form maṇjāḍi, representing an independent borrowing < Telugu manjāḍi, has occasionally been used in English contexts:1886 W. Elliot Coins S. India 47 Maṇjāḍi,..commonly reckoned about 4 grains, but in reality it is somewhat more, or above 4½-5 grains.

Obsolete.

In southern India and Sri Lanka (Ceylon): a weight used for precious stones, varying regionally and usually between 4 and 5 grains (1 and 1.25 carats).The value is given incorrectly in quot. 1555 at α. , owing to a misinterpretation of the intention of tare.
