Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Manganeisen.
Etymology: < German Manganeisen ferromanganese (1877 or earlier) < Mangan (see manganese n.) + Eisen iron n.1 N.E.D. (1905) gives the pronunciation as (ma·ŋganˌəi:z'n) /ˈmaŋɡanˌaɪzən/.
Engineering. Obsolete.
An alloy of iron containing manganese.An alloy containing between 15 and 30 per cent manganese is usually called spiegeleisen or spiegel; one containing a higher proportion of manganese (usually about 80 per cent) is more commonly called ferromanganese.
