Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Turkish. Partly a borrowing from Arabic. Etymons: Ottoman Turkish mānġāl; Arabic manqal.
Etymology: < Ottoman Turkish mānġāl brazier, chafing-dish (Turkish mangal) and its etymon Arabic manqal brazier.
Now chiefly historical.
A kind of charcoal brazier used in Turkey and the Middle East.

Origin: A borrowing from Portuguese. Etymon: Portuguese mangal.
Etymology: < Portuguese mangal < mangue mangrove (see mangrove n.1) + -al -al suffix1.
Ecology.
Mangrove swamp forest. Cf. mangrove n.1 Compounds 1.

1968 W. Macnae in Adv. Marine Biol. 6 75 To avoid confusion I shall use the word mangal when dealing with the forest community, and the word mangrove for individual kinds of tree.
