Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin malleabilis.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin malleabilis capable of being hammered (1267 in a British source; from a1275 in figurative use) < malleare to hammer (see malleate v.) + -abilis -able suffix.Middle French malléable is recorded in Französisches etymol. Wörterbuch s.v. malleus as being attested in sense 1a from the 14th cent., although no documentation is given; Trésor de la langue française records this only from 1500. Old Occitan malleable is attested from the 14th cent.
