Origin: A variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: mar v.
Etymology: Variant of mar v. (see mar v. 4c), probably arising from frequent use of marred adj. in the sense ‘spoilt’. Compare mardy n. and adj., and quot. 1874 at sense 1 at that entry.
English regional (chiefly northern).
transitive. To spoil (a child) by indulgence; to cosset. Also with up.
