Etymology: < either Italian marzapane or early modern German martzepan marzipan n., after pain n.2; compare post-classical Latin martiapanes (1492, in an Italian source), panis marcius (1521, in a German source). Compare slightly later marzipan n.The first element may exemplify the late Middle English and early modern English change of /ts/ to // (see ch n.); association with March n.2 is also likely (compare the post-classical Latin forms).
Now archaic and historical.
