Etymology: < post-classical Latin marchion-, marchio (633) < marca , marcha or its Germanic base (see mark n.1); compare post-classical Latin marchia (see march n.3). Compare Middle French marchion (mid 15th cent.); also marcher n.1, marquis n.1, margrave n.Early attestations of post-classical Latin marchio are in Frankish contexts. It appears in British sources from the mid 10th cent., and is attested denoting specifically a marquis from the 13th cent. (a usage still preserved in Latin in heraldic use).
Obsolete.
A lord or ruler of or in a border territory.
