单词 manzanilla
释义

manzanillan.

Brit. /ˌmanzəˈnɪlə/, /ˌmanzəˈniːljə/, U.S. /ˌmænzəˈni(j)ə/
Forms: 1800s manzanillo (irregular), 1800s– manzanilla, 1900s manzinilla (irregular). Also with capital initial.
Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish manzanilla.
Etymology: In sense 1 < Spanish manzanilla (masculine), further etymology uncertain: probably (as in sense 2) < manzanilla (feminine) camomile, camomile tea, variety of small olive, small apple (1490 as mançanilla ; c1100 as mansanêlla , 10th cent. as massanêlla in Mozarabic texts), or perhaps directly < that word's etymon manzana apple (mid 14th cent. as mançana , c1140 as maçana , 1112 as mazana ; < classical Latin mattiāna , matiāna a kind of apple, use as noun (short for māla matiāna ; compare māla Appiāna , māla Claudiāna ) of neuter plural of mattiānus , matiānus < the name of Gaius Matius (late 1st cent. b.c.), Roman expert on arboriculture and gastronomy + -ānus -an suffix) + -illa -illa suffix. Another suggested etymology for sense 1 is < Manzanilla, the name of a village near Seville, although there is no record of such sherry having been made there. Those who support derivation < manzanilla camomile normally explain the name of the sherry as being on account of a resemblance to camomile tea in smell; derivation directly < manzana apple is explained as being on account of a resemblance of the grapes from which the sherry is made to small apples. Compare also manchineel n.
