Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish manzanilla.

Etymology: In sense 1 < Spanish manzanilla (masculine), further etymology uncertain: probably (as in sense 2) < manzanilla (feminine) camomile, camomile tea, variety of small olive, small apple (1490 as mançanilla ; c1100 as mansanêlla , 10th cent. as massanêlla in Mozarabic texts), or perhaps directly < that word's etymon manzana apple (mid 14th cent. as mançana , c1140 as maçana , 1112 as mazana ; < classical Latin mattiāna , matiāna a kind of apple, use as noun (short for māla matiāna ; compare māla Appiāna , māla Claudiāna ) of neuter plural of mattiānus , matiānus < the name of Gaius Matius (late 1st cent. b.c.), Roman expert on arboriculture and gastronomy + -ānus -an suffix) + -illa -illa suffix.
