Etymology: < man n.¹ + fare n.¹With sense 1 compare Old English fær vessel, ship (fare n.¹ is not recorded in this sense in Middle English); manfare probably originally denoted a boat navigable by only one man (compare Middle English mannbot , Middle Low German mankāne in the same sense). With sense 2 compare fare n.¹ 1c; perhaps originally denoting one man's full complement of nets (compare quot. 1887 at sense 2). In form manshare in quot. 1887 at sense 2 re-formed after share n.² The related Old English manfaru occurs in the sense ‘band of men’ (compare discussion of Old English fær and faru s.v. fare n.¹).
