Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin mandrita; Greek μανδρίτης.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin mandrita shepherd, abbot (9th cent.) or its etymon Byzantine Greek μανδρίτης ‘person in charge of a μάνδρα ’, monk < μάνδρα (see mandriarch n.) + -ίτης -ite suffix1. Compare French mandrite (1765), and archimandrite n.
Obsolete. rare.
A person who lives in a cave or other secluded place; a hermit.
