Origin: A borrowing from Arabic. Etymon: Arabic mandīl.
Etymology: < Arabic mandīl sash, turban cloth, handkerchief ( > Persian mandīl towel, napkin, tablecloth, handkerchief, turban, Turkish mendil handkerchief) < Byzantine Greek μανδίλιον , μαντίλιον , μανδήλη cloth, hand-towel, handkerchief, tablecloth, or its etymon classical Latin mantēlium , mantēle hand-towel, napkin (see mandylion n.). Compare French mendil (1659 in the source translated in quot. 1662, itself translating a German source (1656), which has Mendil ); compare also Spanish mantele towel (908), Spanish Arabic mandīl mandill n.On Arabic mandīl see further F. Rosenthal Four Ess. on Art & Lit. in Islam (1971) 63–99. N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation as (mæ·ndil) /ˈmændɪl/.
