Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French mansuétude; Latin mansuētūdō.
Etymology: < Middle French mansuétude (c1265 in Old French) or its etymon classical Latin mansuētūdō tameness, civilization, clemency < mansuēs mansuete adj. + -tūdō -tude suffix. Compare the earlier Old French forms mansuetume (late 12th cent.; suffix after e.g. coutume custom n. and adj.) and mansuetudine (c1200); also Italian mansuetudine (a1294), Catalan mansuetud (1399), Spanish mansuetud, Portuguese mansuetude (17th cent.).
