Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French mansuet; Latin mansuētus, mansuēscere.
Etymology: < Middle French mansuet (12th cent. in Old French) and its etymon classical Latin mansuētus tame, civilized, gentle, past participle of mansuēscere to become tame < manus hand (see manus n.1) + suēscere to become accustomed, cognate with ancient Greek ἔθος custom, habit (compare with lengthened grade ἦθος ethos n.), Sanskrit svadhā own mode of action, potency, and perhaps also with the Germanic base of Gothic sidus , Old English sidu , etc., custom (see sedeful adj.). Compare Old Occitan mansuet (c1300–50), Italian mansueto (c1308), Catalan mansuet (c1400), Spanish mansueto (1514), Portuguese mansueto (17th cent.; mansuetissimo 16th cent.). N.E.D. (1905) gives the pronunciation as (mænswī·t, mæ·nswīt) /mænˈswiːt/ /ˈmænswiːt/.
