单词 mansionary
释义

mansionaryadj.n.

Brit. /ˈmanʃn̩(ə)ri/, /ˈmanʃən(ə)ri/, U.S. /ˈmæn(t)ʃəˌnɛri/
Forms: see mansion n. and -ary suffix1; also late Middle English mansonarye.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin mansionarius.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin mansionarius custodian of a church or of its treasure (6th cent.), resident canon (c1027), inhabitant (1188) < classical Latin mansiōn- , mansiō mansion n. + -ārius -ary suffix1. Compare Old French mansionaire, Middle French, French mansionnaire custodian of a church (c1190, historical from c1700), inhabitant, tenant (early 14th cent.).The adjectival sense used by Bokenham in quot. 1447 at sense A. 1 does not appear to have an immediate antecedent in post-classical Latin, Anglo-Norman, or Old French: compare post-classical Latin mansionarius ‘of residence, for dwelling’ (in domus mansionaria, locus mansionarius, both 13th cent. in British sources), and among senses attested in continental sources also ‘relating to a manse, holding a manse’.
