Origin: Perhaps formed within English, by derivation. Or perhaps a borrowing from French. Etymons: mal- prefix, journey n.; French male jornee.
Etymology: Perhaps < mal- prefix + journey n., or perhaps < Old French, Middle French male jornee (early 13th cent.), although this is attested only in the sense ‘evil day’, the specific sense ‘evil day of battle’ being attested only for the variant mal jornal (13th cent. in both senses).
Obsolete.
An unfortunate or lost battle.
