Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French malchus.
Etymology: < French malchus sword (1534 in Middle French), confessional with only one oreille, or place for a penitent to be heard (1743; 1694 in form malcus), in both senses < the name of Malchus, a servant of the high priest, whose ear St Peter cut off with a sword (according to John 18:10). N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation as (mæ·lkɒ̆s) /ˈmælkəs/.
Obsolete. rare.
1. Church History. A confessional of a particular type (see quot. 1883).
