Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French malbec.
Etymology: < French malbec (1836 as name of a variety of grape growing in the Médoc), malbeck (1867 in Littré), of unknown origin.The Oxf. Compan. Wine (1994) at cited word notes that ‘in Argentina it is often called Malbeck’.
A dark-berried variety of wine grape, originally cultivated in Bordeaux and now planted at least in small quantities in most wine-growing countries, but used esp. in the red wines of Cahors and Argentina. Also: wine made from this grape.The variety is also called Côt and, esp. in Cahors, Auxerrois.
