Origin: Probably of multiple origins. From a proper name, combined with an English element. Probably partly a borrowing from Dutch, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name Malaysia , -an suffix; Dutch Maleisch , -ian suffix.
Etymology: < Malaysia (1857), a name given to the whole of Indonesia and Malaysia, and since 1963 to the territories included in the Federation of Malaysia ( < Malay n. + -sia , probably after Australasia (1766), Indonesia (1850)) + -an suffix. The isolated early examples in quots. c16152 at sense A., c1615 at sense B. are probably independently < Dutch †Maleisch (see Malays n.) + -ian suffix (with the form, compare Chinesian n.).
