Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Dutch. Or (ii) formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Dutch Maleisch ; Malay n., English -s.
Etymology: Either < Dutch †Maleisch (1596, now Maleis ) Malay (adjective), or < Malay n. + -s (compare Moors n. and note at that entry). Compare French malais (1714).
Obsolete. rare.
