Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian maraschino.
Etymology: < Italian maraschino (a1786) < marasca marasca n. + -ino -ine suffix4. Some forms are influenced by French marasquin (1739), or Spanish marrasquino (1899).The pronunciation with /-ʃ-/ seems to be first attested in the United States in Webster (1961). It begins to appear in some British dictionaries in the 1970s, and gains rapidly in currency during the following two decades.
A strong sweet liqueur distilled from the marasca cherry.
