Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Maranta.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Maranta (C. Plumier Nova Plantarum Americanarum Genera (1703) i. 16) < the name of Bartollomeo Maranta (c1500–71) of Venosa, an Italian writer on medicinal plants. Compare French marante, maranta (1703).
A genus of tropical American monocotyledonous plants (family Marantaceae); (also maranta) a plant of this genus, esp. (a) arrowroot, M. arundinacea (now rare, perhaps obsolete); (b) the prayer plant, M. leuconeura, widely grown as a house plant for its ornamental foliage.Valid publication of the genus name: Linnaeus Species Plantarum (1753) I. 2.The name Maranta has sometimes been used for certain cultivated members of the closely related genus Calathea.
