Origin: A borrowing from Swahili. Etymon: Swahili mandazi.
Etymology: < Swahili maandazi (also mandazi) < ma-, plural class prefix + -andazi, small sweetened bread or cake fried in oil, ultimately < -andaa to prepare. Compare German Mandazi (1925 or earlier).Originally a plural, but also used as a singular in English (sometimes with a secondary plural form in -s). In Swahili, the singular is andazi.
In East African cookery: a small cake consisting of sweetened dough fried in oil, usually triangular in shape and typically eaten as a snack or as an accompaniment to other dishes; (as a mass noun) these cakes collectively.
