单词 mandative
释义

mandativeadj.

Brit. /ˈmandətɪv/, /manˈdeɪtɪv/, U.S. /ˈmændədɪv/, /ˌmænˈdeɪdɪv/
Forms: 1500s–1600s mandatiue, 1600s– mandative.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin mandativus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin mandativus (from c370 in grammatical use; c1184 in a British source in sense ‘commanding’) < classical Latin mandāt- , past participial stem of mandāre (see mandate n.) + -īvus -ive suffix (compare -ative suffix).Mandative, like future imperative, was a name given by ancient grammarians to the 3rd person imperative. It was so called because it entailed a command entrusted to a second person for future performance by a third person. Commands conveyed by intermediaries were often described in Latin by derivatives of classical Latin mandāre.
