The process of turning silk or wool yellow or orange by the action of nitric acid.

1839 A. Ure Dict. Arts 240 Mandarining of silk stuffs and chalys.—This style of printing depends upon the property which nitric acid possesses of giving to silk and woollen stuffs a yellow colour.
1852 C. Tomlinson Cycl. Useful Arts (1854) I. 531/2 By this method, which is called mandarining, an orange colour is given to silk and wool.
