Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin mandant-, mandāns, mandāre.
Etymology: < classical Latin mandant-, mandāns, present participle of mandāre to command, order (see mandate n.). In member mandant after post-classical Latin membrum mandans brain (see quot. 1543 at sense A.). Compare Middle French mandant (14th cent. in sense A., especially in membre mandant). N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation as (mæ·ndănt) /ˈmændənt/.
Obsolete.
A. adj.
Physiology. Of an organ with reference to the brain: that is the source of command or control. Chiefly in member mandant.
