Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French Mandane.
Etymology: < French Mandane (1738 in form Mantanne , 1742 in form Mantane ), ultimately < a form related to Santee Sioux mawátąna and Yankton Sioux mąwátanį , although the contraction in the first syllable is unexplained. Compare Spanish Mandana (late 18th cent.). With the β. forms compare French Mandal (1843).
