Etymology: < either autonom- (in autonomous adj., autonomy n.) or ancient Greek αὐτόνομος autonomous adj. + -ism suffix. Compare French autonomisme (1850 or earlier). Compare earlier autonomist n., autonomy n.In quot. 1867 at sense 1 after German Autonomismus (1861 in the passage translated, or earlier).
