Origin: A borrowing from Sanskrit. Etymon: Sanskrit maṇḍala.
Etymology: < Sanskrit maṇḍala disc, circle, charmed circle (of a conjurer), mystical symbol in the shape of a circle, a technical term for one of the ten divisions of the Rig Veda. Compare Persian mandal a mystical circle drawn on the ground inside which an enchanter sits in order to conjure up demons.
(a) A symbolic circular figure, usually with symmetrical divisions and figures of deities, etc., in the centre, used in Buddhism and other religions as a representation of the universe, and serving esp. as an object of meditation. (b) In Jungian psychology: an image or archetype (archetype n. 2c) of a similar circle visualized in dreams, held to symbolize a striving for unity of self and completeness.
