释义 | autonomasyn. rare. The substitution of a common for a proper noun in a context in which the general term has acquired an accepted specific sense (as town for London). Cf. antonomasia n., synecdoche n.In the absence of non-glossarial quotations N.E.D. (1885) disputed the existence of the word except as an error for antonomasia. However further evidence from the 19th and early 20th centuries, and the pre-existence of autonomasia n., suggest that the term, although rare, was in fact established in that period. ΚΠ 1839 N. Webster Man. Useful Stud. xi. 132 Autonomasy is when a word of a common signification is used for a particular thing or person. Thus we say, ‘John is gone to the city, meaning New York’. 1875 E.
