Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Málaga.
Etymology: < Málaga, the name of a seaport and wine-growing region in the south of Spain < Arabic Mālaqa < classical Latin Malaca < Hellenistic Greek Μάλακα: further etymology uncertain, probably < a Phoenician word (the city was probably a Phoenician foundation).It is uncertain whether forms in -s in sense 1 should be regarded as singular or plural.
1. A white or (now usually) red fortified wine originally shipped from Malaga. Also more fully Malaga sack (sack n.3 b), Malaga wine.
