Etymology: < Middle French maladif sickly (13th cent. in Old French; compare Anglo-Norman maladif ) < malade malade adj. + -if -ive suffix.The word initially occurred as a naturalized English item. After the mid 19th cent. it was reborrowed, usually in the French masculine form maladif , but occasionally, as in quot. 1940, in the French feminine form.
Of, relating to, or affected with physical or spiritual sickness; sickly.
