Etymology: < scientific Latin Magilus ( P. Denys de Montfort Conchyliologie systématique (1810) II. 43), of unexplained origin.Metathetic variants magile , magillinus of post-classical Latin mygale mygale n. and the derivative adjective mygallinus would explain the form, although there is no evidence to suggest a supposed resemblance to or other connection with a shrew; A. N. Herrmannsen ( Indicis Generum Malacoorum Primordia (1847) II. 11) suggests ‘Etym. ?μάκελος i.q. ϕράγμος, claustrum’ (i.e., Byzantine Greek μάκελος, variant of ancient Greek μάκελλον enclosure) although there is no firm evidence to support this.

A genus of Indo-Pacific marine gastropods of the family Coralliophilidae, symbiotic with living coral; (also magilus) a gastropod of this genus.
