Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek αὐτόματος , -graph comb. form.
Etymology: < ancient Greek αὐτόματος acting of itself (see automaton n.) + -graph comb. form.
Now historical.
A scientific form of the planchette (planchette n. 3) used for recording involuntary movements of the hand and arm.

1892 J. Jastrow in Amer. Jrnl. Psychol. 4 400 This apparatus enables us to record all movement in the horizontal plane, and, inasmuch as its chief purpose is to write slight involuntary movements, we have given it the name of the automatograph and may speak of such a record as an automatogram.
