Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Magenta.
Etymology: < Magenta, the name of a town in northern Italy near which the French and Sardinians under Napoleon III defeated the Austrians in 1859, shortly before the dye was discovered. Compare Magdala red n.The word occurs in French only as a loan from English (1862).
