Origin: A borrowing from Japanese. Etymon: Japanese makikomi.
Etymology: < Japanese makikomi (also used in professional wrestling), nominalized stem (1603 as maqicomi , verb infinitive, in Vocabulario da Lingoa de Iapam) of makikomu to roll in < maki- (see makimono n.) + -komi nominalized stem of -komu (suffixal verb) to bring in, into, inwards, towards oneself.

A throw in which one's opponent is wound around one's body before being thrown to the ground.

1970 A. P. Harrington Judo Guide to Black Belt vii. 128 A Maki-komi technique entails you winding the opponent around your body before throwing him to the ground.
1988 Black Belt Internat. 1 7/2 The thrower is completing the technique by doing a makikomi action and winding her opponent over and onto her back.
