Etymology: < make- comb. form + bate n.1Both applications under sense A. 2 result from the derivation of polemonium < ancient Greek πόλεμος war (see polemoniaceous adj.); the Latin name which Gerard uses for jasmine is Polemonium sive Trifolium fruticans.
