1776 C. Burney Gen. Hist. Music I. viii. 132 It appears that the union of two voices in octaves was called Magadizing from a treble instrument of the name of Magadis, strung with double strings tuned octaves to each other.
1901 H. E. Wooldridge Oxf. Hist. Music I. 44 The Greek practice of magadizing, in which..lay the fundamental principle of Polyphony.
1917 Encycl. Relig. & Ethics IX. 20/1 This method of singing alternately at the interval of an octave in pitch differed from the Greek idea of antiphony, since in their case the method was simultaneous (and not alternate) and was termed ‘magadizing’.
