Etymology: < ancient Greek μάγαδις an octave concord, also as adjective in unknown sense designating a flute (interpreted by Hellenistic and Byzantine authors as the name of a kind of flute or harp: see Liddell & Scott's Greek-Eng. Lexicon Rev. Suppl. (1996) and quot. 1992), probably < μαγαδ- , μαγάς magade n. (although the latter word is first attested only in Hellenistic Greek).

Music.

Used to denote what was believed to have been a type of musical instrument known in ancient Greece (see quots.).
