Mineralogy.
A rare clay mineral, a monoclinic sodium silicate, NaSi7O13(OH)3·4H2O, found in putty-like layers deposited from brines of some former lakes.

1967 H. P. Eugster in Science 8 Sept. 1178/3 This white layer, with the consistency of soft putty, is composed predominantly of spherulites of a well-crystallized hydrous sodium silicate, here named magadiite.
1975 Amer. Mineralogist 60 643/2 Above 100°C the magadiite becomes dehydrated, and the basal spacing decreases to 11.5 Å.
1979 M. Leakey Olduvai Gorge 84 It forms only in soda or alkaline lakes with high concentrations of sodium carbonate, such as Lake Magadi in Kenya... In these lakes sodium combines with silica which is brought into the lakes by rivers, to form rare sodium-silicate minerals such as magadiite.
