单词 automat
释义

automatn.

Brit. /ˈɔːtəmat/, U.S. /ˈɔdəˌmæt/, /ˈɔdoʊˌmæt/, /ˈɑdəˌmæt/, /ˈɑdoʊˌmæt/
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from German. Partly either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin. Or (iii) a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: French automate; Latin automatum; Greek αὐτόματον; German Automat.
Etymology: Originally (in quot. 1671) either < French automate automate n., or < automaton n. or one of its classical etymons (with omission of the ending). In later use < German Automat automaton (1748 in plural Automaten ; in earlier use (from 1575 onwards) only with Latin or Greek inflectional endings, e.g. automata (nominative plural; 1575)), vending machine (1894 or earlier) < classical Latin automatum and its etymon ancient Greek αὐτόματον (see automaton n.); in later use (and perhaps also in form), the German noun was perhaps influenced by French automate automate n.With sense 2a compare the following early instance of German Automat in this sense (as final element of a compound, in the name of a jukebox) in an English context:1895 Musical News 23 Mar. 267/2 Another interesting novelty is the ‘Polyphon-Musik-Automat’. When the coin is put into the slot, the purchaser not only secures his chocolate or cigar, but the machine graciously plays a musical accompaniment. The use in sense 2b is apparently not paralleled in German. Compare later -mat comb. form.
